George Nolfi, the new writer for the upcoming Star Wars movie starring Daisy Ridley, recently shared his vision for the sequel in an interview. The film, reportedly titled “New Jedi Order,” is set 15 years after the events of “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.”
Nolfi explained his approach to the project, saying, “You look at what’s come before you, and the broad ideas of what they want to do. Meaning Lucasfilm, Disney, Sharmeen [Obaid-Chinoy], the director, and then you do what a writer does and try to put beats of a story together.
You try and imagine characters and then you present that with an understanding that it needs to honor a long, incredible tradition.”
The writer, who has a background in philosophy and politics, also discussed the potential for political themes in the new film. “If you think about George Lucas, the six movies that he did and the universe that he created, it’s actually very steeped in broad notions of politics,” Nolfi said. “It’s not talking about today, per se, but there’s the Empires Nazism/Roman Empire.
The democracy of the Roman Empire collapsing and becoming an empire, and the perennial story of human beings organizing themselves against chaos.”
Nolfi believes that science fiction, and particularly Star Wars, has the ability to address deep issues without feeling like a lecture.
Nolfi shares vision for sequel
“One of the wonderful things about science fiction—and Star Wars, which is more almost science fantasy or space opera—is that you can raise the deepest issues without it feeling like a philosophy class, or a political science class, or something I read in the newspaper today.
It can be about real things, deep things,” he added. Directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the movie will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey Skywalker, possibly taking on a mentor role. Ridley shared her involvement in the film’s development, saying, “I feel more consciously involved [than before], but I remember various things either J.J. [Abrams] or Rian [Johnson] told me, so I was always really made to feel involved.
I’m aware of the route development. It’s also really nice to know that we have the time to do it right. And of course, I’m really excited to film, and I’m really excited to share developments with the world.”
As of now, “Star Wars: New Jedi Order” does not have an official release date, but fans eagerly await further updates from the production team as the film continues to take shape.
