Elton John performs with Chappell Roan at Oscars party

Chappell Roan, a rising pop star, performed at Elton John’s Oscar party on Sunday, March 2. The 27-year-old singer shared the stage with the 77-year-old music legend during the 33rd Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party. Roan headlined the event and performed songs from her album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.” The highlight of the night was when she and John collaborated on a rendition of her hit “Pink Pony Club.”

John, who retired from touring in 2023, spent much of the performance seated but still showed off some dance moves.

In a playful moment, Roan placed John’s pink cowboy hat back on his head when it slipped off. When introducing Roan to the audience, John praised her as “one of the biggest stars in the world right now, quite rightly so.” He shared how he fell in love with her and her album when he first discovered her music. “I immediately wanted to get her on the program, and she came on the program and I interviewed her and I fell in love with her and I fell in love with the album,” John said.

“I’ve continued to be her friend hopefully and speak to her quite a lot.”

John also praised Roan for her authenticity both on and off stage, calling her voice candid and wonderful. “You’re the best, baby.

Roan performed a cover of John’s hit “Your Song,” dedicating it to her parents who were in attendance.

“I’m gonna sing a song that is one of my favorite songs of all time,” she said. “I dedicate it to my parents because they introduced me to Elton John.”

She admitted, “Girl, it’s kind of scary singing it in front of the person who wrote it and sang it.”

An emotional Roan expressed her gratitude to John for believing in her music. Holding his hand, she said, “And I’m so grateful that you would have me here.

You have sacrificed so much for the queer community, and you made it so I could be the artist I could be.”

David Furnish also commented on John and Roan’s relationship, noting that John recognized her talent early on. “Subsequently, she’s become a dear friend to Elton and me. He keeps an eye on her and loves what she has achieved musically.”
