Guy Pearce discusses ‘The Brutalist’ review

Guy Pearce has opened up about a tense interaction with a “snobby” actress early in his career. In an interview, the Australian actor shared a story from about a year after he left the soap opera “Neighbours.”

Pearce played Mike Young on “Neighbours” from 1986 to 1989 before transitioning to a successful Hollywood career. He talked about the perception of soap actors at the time and the opportunities the role gave him, even if it was initially looked down upon.

“In the old days you were either a theatre actor or a film actor, and if you got stuck in a soap you were the lowest of the low,” Pearce said. “But what an opportunity. I had no clue what I was doing but learnt a lot.”

Pearce then described a specific incident that left a lasting impression on him.

Pearce reflects on soap stigma

“I did a play a year after I left ‘Neighbours,’ and this snobby actress said, ‘How could you even do that?’ I wanted to punch her!”

He clarified that he did not actually resort to violence, but the comment highlighted the disdain some held for actors moving from soap operas to other roles. “It was such a horrible attitude,” Pearce added.

“And then, five years later, I saw her on some terrible ad on TV. I so wanted to go and find her and say, ‘OK …'” he said. Pearce has recently received praise for his performance in the film “The Brutalist,” where he plays a sinister tycoon who mentors a troubled architect.

The movie has garnered significant acclaim, including a five-star review praising its ambitious format and intense storytelling.
