Scott Derrickson, the director of “The Black Phone,” has revealed new details about the upcoming sequel. In a recent interview at the Sundance Film Festival, Derrickson shared that “The Black Phone 2” will be a high school coming-of-age movie, following the characters from the first film as they navigate their teenage years. “I just finished shooting Black Phone 2, and what I can tell you is that I didn’t feel obliged to make a sequel,” Derrickson said.

“It wasn’t a foregone conclusion that I would make a sequel. But I realized that if I made a big movie after Black Phone, which was The Gorge, by the time I was ready to shoot another film, all those kids would’ve been in high school. So, it’s basically a high school coming-of-age movie in the same way that the first movie was a middle school coming-of-age film.”

The original film, released in 2021, followed 13-year-old Finney as he was abducted by a sadistic killer known as The Grabber.

Finney used a disconnected phone to communicate with the ghosts of The Grabber’s previous victims, ultimately leading to his escape.

The sequel will feature a time jump, with Finney and his sister Gwen now in high school and dealing with new challenges.

While plot details remain under wraps, the return of original cast members Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, Miguel Mora, and Ethan Hawke suggests that the sequel will continue to explore the supernatural elements introduced in the first film. The addition of Demián Bichir to the cast also hints at a deeper exploration of the characters’ lives and relationships. Fans have been eagerly anticipating news about a sequel since the success of the first film, which earned over $160 million at the box office and was praised for its blend of horror and coming-of-age drama.

As the characters face new horrors and challenges, the sequel promises to deliver the same thrilling blend of supernatural terror and emotional depth that made the first film a standout in the horror genre.
